Without any shadow of doubt, if you ask any writer what is the hardest part of what they do, they are likely to tell you that writing the first sentence is the most difficult bit.

Before you start, when you are looking at the whole project, it’s like sitting at the bottom of a very tall mountain. But, the fact is that the mountain is there to be climbed and, no matter how tough it is, it CAN be climbed, step by step.

Writing an eBook is no different. A daunting, perhaps even scary task before you set out on your journey, but one that will get progressively easier as you become more and more skilled at dealing with the task in hand. Like the mountain, it’s a step by step process, sometimes laborious, sometimes inspiring, until one day you arrive and the “summit” and write your last word!

The first thing that you need to do before you attempt to write one single word is to get organized.

Start out by coming up with a few potential ideas for the title of your book. Simply write down everything that comes into your head an eventually, you’ll find what you are looking for.

One thing that helps me with titles is to try and think of them when I am NOT at my computer. If you try to think of titles when driving your car, taking the train or digging the garden, the different perspective of your surroundings will often generate title ideas that are really original!

Aim for a title that tells your potential reader what the book is about, whilst also being intriguing enough to make him or her want to know more. For example, use words like “secrets” or “hidden”, to imply that there is more than the title is telling them.

Have a clear picture in mind of who your target audience for the book is and try to “connect” with that audience in your title.

For example, if your eBook is about gardening, which tends to be a more mature persons hobby, a title like “Yo, dude, dig that lawn” whilst undoubtedly pretty “trick” and clever, would be a complete waste of time!

Next, write a two to three sentence outline for you eBook. What is the problem and how your book will solve it is basically what you are after here.

The purpose of this is to keep you focused. At all times, make sure that everything that you are writing supports the ideas and proposition that you are putting forward in your book.

Also, this outline will stop you wandering off down “blind alleys”, writing about stuff that, whilst it may be very interesting or informative, in fact, it does nothing to support what you are writing about.

Such “off topic” meanderings in eBooks are very common, and are often known as “fluff, “filler” or (more succinctly) “BS”! Fill your eBook with this stuff, and the reader will pretty quickly cotton on to the fact that you don’t really have much to say, and the amount of people asking for their money back will be depressingly high!

This brings us to the most crucial question that you must ask yourself, as unemotionally and in as detached manner as you can possibly manage.

Is it really worth writing your eBook at all?

Is your idea big enough to fill a book, or is it just an article stretched out to the maximum? Are you genuinely imparting new knowledge or perhaps old knowledge presented in a new and refreshing way?

In other words, will someone who bys your eBook get value from it?

Only you can decide this before you write the book but you must be self-critical to the max, because, as sure as eggs is eggs, the people who buy your book will be!

Will your book contain genuinely useful information and is that information right up to date. It’s amazing the number of eBooks that come to the market spouting stuff that was working last year as “the latest thing”!

Can your book positively affect the lives of your readers? If so, how, and how easy or difficult is it to act on your ideas and suggestions?

Is your book a good read, one that will retain the attention of the reader?

If you can, with hand on heart, answer yes to these questions, then you sound like you have something worth getting out there, so start writing!

Remember what we said earlier about the title? Aim it as specifically as possible at your target market? The same goes for every word of your eBook. Do NOT try to aim your book at “everyman” – target your market, never lose sight of who that person is and aim every word you write at them.

For example, going back to our earlier example, your eBook is about gardening. Try to think of someone you know who enjoys their garden and aim every word at that specific person. In fact, give them the first copy to read when the eBooks finished – I’ll guarantee that they will come up with many useful additions for you!

Think about why you are writing the book in the first place. What is it that you want to achieve by doing so? Are you planning to sell it from a website, or give it away as a free gift, trying to collect names for a list? Are you planning to split it up into separate modules to give away as an e-course?

Perhaps you just want to use it to help establish your credentials as an expert in your chosen field?

Only you can answer this one.

Aim at all times to make your writing as engaging and interesting as possible.

Use real life examples, stories, anecdotes, testimonials, illustrations and pictures to break up your “message” into bite-sized hunks. Keep our sentences short, and aim to write reasonably informally and in a friendly manner. You are not attempting to write a classic of literature and an informal, relaxed style tends to work best.

Don’t expect to be a great writer straight out of the box. Many people approach writing their first eBook never having written anything more than emails since they left school, and writing needs practice.

Once you begin writing, try to target a minimum amount of writing that you will do every day, so that you can get into a rhythm. Personally, I would strongly suggest that you do not begin every day by going back and reading what you did yesterday. Doing this, you end up wasting your time “editing” your work and this is a job that you should leave until the first full drat of your book is complete.

Remember that I just suggested that you should not aim to write a literary masterpiece?

Bear this in mind when you are formatting your book. Whilst written books often tend to have a fairly high percentage of the page covered in type, your eBook will sometimes be read onscreen, and therefore there have to be plenty of white areas to avoid straining the reader’s eyes!

Use plenty of bulleted lists. This highlights the points that you are trying to make in a way that is particularly easy to absorb and comprehend.

Pick an easy to read font (I tend to use Verdana) and make sure that the spacing between lines make the pages of your eBook comfortable to read, even on the smallest PC screen.

Spell check the whole thing, but don’t rely on it totally. Type in “an” when you meant “and” and the spellchecker may well miss it (it is a word, after all) but it could make your sentence nonsensical, and lead your reader off in completely the wrong direction!

Proof read it at least a couple of times, and then get someone else to do the same. Absolutely, totally guaranteed that they will pick up errors that you missed (I used to proof read for a leading English school in Japan, so I know what I am talking about!)

Finally, compile the book itself. The most widely accepted format for such publications are PDF files, and these also allow you to publish your book with in-built security features, so that people cannot, for example, copy and past your work.

If you need a great free tool for creating PDF files, do a search for PrimoPDF. I use their PDF creator tool all he time, and would thoroughly recommend it to anyone.

Once it’s in PDF format, that’s it, you’re done.

Great job – you are now a full fledged member of the eBook writer’s guild (or, you would be, if I hadn’t just made that up!).

As I’ve said make sure they are quality articles. If you create e-book using rubbish you’ll just get a sky-high refund rate and it will all be a pointless exercise. Do it right from the off and you’ll set yourself up for success.

Try and tie all the articles together into one sub niche. For example a sub niche of gardening might be composting. So you could find articles on composting left over food, what plants not to compost that kind of thing? Use a bit of imagination when using this method.

You don’t want to use any articles without the author’s permission. Remember the majority of articles will have been submitted so the author can get visitors to their site without spending a dime. I can actually prove this to you right now – how much time, energy and money do you spend in thinking up of excuses, fighting with your spouse over trivial matter, surfing uselessly on the internet, watching crap on the idiotbox, and spending money on products / services you don’t really need? (Try keeping a record for just one month, you will be surprised). Can not you utilize this time, energy and money for your beloved, for someone with whom you’ve spoken your marriage vows, for someone with whom you decided to spend the rest of your living life? Now if you’re really serious in leading a happy married life, I’ve written a few tips below that will give you maximum ROI in today’s hectic times, so to speak! But before I begin, you need to understand that work time and family time don’t mix, you need to separate them. While it’s OK to share your experience about your day with your spouse, it is not OK to continue your work throughout your family time. If you work entirely out from your home or you have deadlines and need to bring some of the work, home; set a specific time when you plan to complete it and inform it to your spouse. And when the time comes for it to get over, you better quit!

Below are some tips to spruce up your marriage:

1. Spending quality time together is a great way to enhance your marriage, especially doing something of common interest. Watching movies together cuddled on the patio, dining out, going to parties, gardening, cooking, going to the gym, eating together, going for a weekend getaway, going for a walk, etc are just some of the things you can do together, which you would anyway be doing it. Gifting a flower without any occasion (just creatively say “for being my best friend and life partner”), surprise tickets to a concert, getting up a little early and serving breakfast in bed, saying “I love you, sweetheart” just out of the blue and at a time when your spouse least expected it, offering to give a massage, doing one of their errands without being told, flirt with your spouse in a public place (especially if you don’t generally do it), giving compliments, just once leave the toilet seat up (or down whichever is the opposite of your habit), stealing a kiss, making a greeting card and sending it to his office (or to her at home), gifting a personalized item like a porcelain cup with your mate’s name, etc are some ideas; put on your thinking cap and get creative! Write a love letter and put it in unexpected places. It doesn’t matter how big or small your front and back yards are, it’s possible to landscape them and make them beautiful. Often times, a small yard is more difficult to landscape than a big one, because every element has equal importance.

If you have a house, then you probably have a front and back yard. They may be postage-stamp sized, but you have them. If your yards our small, it may be even more difficult to landscape than a larger yard, because every single thing in the yard will be magnified and a wrong item will stand out all the more. Make a plan, follow the plan
At the same time as you’re searching for ideas on how you’d like to landscape your front and backyards, have a couple of maps of those yards, drawn to scale. Input all the items such as trees, ponds and buildings that are already there. Decide if you’re going to keep all the trees or if you’re going to cut any down. It’s best to have one master plan, and then use lots of tracing paper to mess around with various ideas until you find one you like.

Sun, wind and rain
The success of your landscape will depend in a large part on nature. Mark down those places in your yard that get the most sun and at what times. Find out from your local weather service which way the prevailing winds blow – you might need a windbreak. And does your area get a lot of rain or only a little rain? That will determine the kinds of plants, flowers and trees you’ll want in your yard, and where you’ll place them so they’ll get the most sun – or the least amount of sun.

Prepare the ground
Conduct some soil tests to find out what kind of soil you have – and add the appropriate fertilizer or other materials to turn it into soil fit for growing. Sandy soil is not as good as soil that is well-intermixed with clay, for example. Also, what’s the pH balance of your soil? It’s easy for you to purchase a kit and do the testing yourself. You want your soil to have a pH balance of between 6 and 7. Anything higher than that is alkaline, anything below that is acidic. You’re striving for a neutral balance between the two.

Do you have any dips or slopes in your yard? Consider filling them in – it will save time in mowing!

Consider the way your lawn drains rainwater. In fact, go out after a rain and walk all the way around, seeking any soft spots. If your soil is predominantly clay, water is retained easily – if its sandy, the water leaches away.

Accessories
Finish off your lawn, flower and vegetable beds with just the right touch. Colored pebbles finish shrubbery beds off nicely and hide the weed fabric underneath which will prevent pesky weeds from popping up and ruining your carefully cultivated look. Statues and fountains can look nice – just don’t choose something too big for your yard.

Care and maintenance
Once you’ve designed and implemented your landscape, you can’t just let it go. Overgrown yards never look attractive. So make sure you mow your lawn on a regular basis. Don’t cut the grass too short – for that will stress it out. Water your lawn thoroughly, but be careful not to over-water. Once a year you’ll probably want to aerate the ground to keep it healthy.

But with a little love and attention, you’ll be able to enjoy your landscaped yard for years to come, and so will your friends and neighbors.

So before you actually dig your hands into the rich earth and start planting anything, make sure that you have a detailed plan of what you want to do – and that you follow that plan.

Before you decide which flowers, grasses and plants your going to use in your landscaping, you must pay attention to the ground in which you’re going to put them. Spend a week or so tracking the sunlight and shade and how it plays across every square inch of your yard. The amount of sunlight an area receives will determine what types of flowers or plants you want to place there.

But don’t forget to track the ground’s reaction to rain, either. Are there any areas that remain soft for a long time after a rain? Are there any areas where the water has pooled? Again this will effect what you do with those areas of ground.

What about trees? Are there currently any trees in your yard and if so, do you plan to keep them all? After a couple of years spent raking leaves during the fall you might consider getting rid of those trees and replacing them with evergreens. Evergreens present their own challenges, of course, as its sometimes difficult for grass to grow right up amongst the roots of the tree.

Do some soil tests, as well. These are done easily with a kit you can buy from any local garden store, or even the bigger supermarkets. You need to check for the pH balance of your soil. If it is too alkaline or too acidic, plants won’t grow properly, and you’ll have to add fertilizer to help put the pH balance back to even.

Make a physical plan
Get yourself some graph paper, and some tracing paper to put over it. Draw a scale-model drawing of each yard on a piece of graph paper, blocking out all important areas such trees and other features that are to remain, and features that will be removed. Then use the tracing paper to sketch in various ideas for flower beds and ornamental design. If you want to get fancy, you can also buy software which will enable you to make these plans in three dimensions.

Where to get ideas
While you’re tracking the private life of the ground, you can also be on the lookout for ideas you’d like to implement. There are dozens of magazines on landscaping and gardening, and innumerable books available from your local library or bookstore. The Home and Gardening Channel will be a fount of ideas as well.

The right equipment
Depending on the size of your yards, you might not want to buy all the equipment you’ll need to do your landscaping, as you’ll probably only need garden rollers and aerators once a year. This equipment can usually be rented from your local garden store.

The right crew
Depending on what you’re going to be putting into your landscape – fountains, ponds, heavy statuary, make sure you have the right crew for the job. Don’t try to move a heavy statue yourself, for example, and if you have absolutely no technical experience, it’s always best to hire a professional to install a pond or fountain.

With all the right stuff, your home will shine like a jewel in its proper setting.
