New home worries, and I need gardening ideas PLEASE!?
Hi, i’ve just moved into a new council home and i’m on a starter tenacy, I don’t know if it’s a permanent tenacy yet, they decide after a year. It’s just really getting me down, I don’t want to lose the place and keep thinking I will, we have decorated it lovely, the only problem is the back garden, it’s full of brambles, weeds, everything, it’s going to take weeks to get it done, and I think the council will think bad of me. Anyone got any ideas on gardening tips or designs or helping me to stop worrying about losing my home.
I might sound pathetic, i’m sorry.
You can pull the weeds out for starters, then you can put on some mulch which can make it look pretty already then you can add some colorful flowers like marigolds or tulips or maybe pansies.

The council will probably be aware of the state of the garden and won’t blame you for it. Don’t panic, just tackle it a bit at a time.
Get some thorn proof gardening gloves an a pair of wellingtons and some good secateurs.(Don’t be fooled into thinking cheap ones are a bargain, because they won’t do the job) Then when you have time just go out and cut some brambles off at ground level. Tackle one small area at a time. Each session when you have cut the brambles off cut them up into manageable lengths and bag them up.
If you can get hold of some old carpet or some thick black plastic lay it over the area you have cleared and leave it over the summer. This will kill off all the weeds underneath it. In areas you can’t cover you’ll find the brambles will start to regrow. Then you can water the area with Roundup, diluted according to the instructions on the packet. This should deal with most of the weeds – they will take several weeks to die. If you get a small area dug over you can put a few flowers in to encourage yourself!
Then you need to decide what you want – flowers, veg, or just grass. Look at other gardens for ideas or go and have a look at gardening books in the Library.
