The Vegetable Gardener's Bible is a valuable resource. And I use alfalfa pellets as a soil conditioner/slow release fertilizer. (nitrogen and hormones that aid plant growth)
References :
This is a good first step:

This site has hundreds of organic gardening tips

I like this site because, as an organic gardener, knowing the nutritional content of compost materials is valuable information. This site offers an easy to interpret table of nutritional values.
References :
I am a Master Gardener, U of I, and a longtime gardener and landscaper.

Compost, compost, compost

Good compost reduces water runoff, reduces weeds, naturally fertilizes, improves soil aeration and percolation and recycles many (non-meat) food leftovers.

Good, organic soil encourages worms, who accelerate the process and enrich the soil through conversion and through aeration
References :
30 years of gardening.

There are a LOT of great tips here.. http://www.mastercomposter.com/
